I love coaching students to tell their stories authentically and effectively, and seeing their confidence in their writing and themselves grow.
I began helping students with their college application essays in 2014, when my oldest daughter and her best friend were applying. I had so much fun, I started volunteering to help other students on their college essays at my daughters' alma mater, Woodside High School. I officially launched Heartwood Editing in 2016 and still love guiding my students. For six years, I also gave feedback on the college essay drafts of WHS AP English students.
I spent more than 20 years as a professional writer and editor, mainly sharing science stories with a general audience for local newspapers, Stanford University, and nonprofit environmental groups. I have a BA in biology from UC Berkeley and a graduate certificate from the Science Communication Program at UC Santa Cruz. My daughters also attended UCs. I live in Redwood City and grew up on the Peninsula (the homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone). My pronouns are she/her.
