I advise students in and beyond the Peninsula and San Francisco Bay Area.
I love coaching students to tell their stories authentically and effectively, and seeing their confidence in their writing and themselves grow.
I began helping students with their college application essays in 2014, when my oldest daughter and her best friend were applying. I had so much fun, I started volunteering to help other students on their college essays at my daughters' alma mater, Woodside High School. I officially launched Heartwood Editing in 2016. In addition to working in-depth with my direct clients, I give feedback on the college drafts of WHS AP English students. (Thanks, WHS Foundation!)
I spent more than 20 years as a professional writer and editor, mainly sharing science stories with a general audience for local newspapers, Stanford University, and nonprofit environmental groups. I have a BA in biology from UC Berkeley and a graduate certificate from the Science Communication Program at UC Santa Cruz. My daughters also attend/ed UCs. I grew up on the Peninsula and now live in Redwood City. My pronouns are she/her.
I’ve known Heather for 14 years and always known her to be intelligent, articulate, and personable. She’s also written the content for various fundraising projects I’ve been involved with and did a fantastic job. I’d highly recommend her for any editing work you may have.
